The brief
The Met, Verizon, and Roblox set out to launch Replica, a kids-focused metaverse experience, timed to a real-world moment at the Met in NYC. A kids' product with a museum's reputation attached means every privacy requirement counts, and the schedule left no room to get one wrong. I was brought in as the advisor to get it out the door compliant and on time.
What I drove
Privacy counsel requirements
Took the requirements our privacy counsel laid out and turned them into work engineers could actually build and test. Requirements only matter once somebody owns them; that was me.
COPPA compliance strategy
A kids-focused experience means COPPA is the floor, not the ceiling. I shaped the compliance approach so the experience met child privacy requirements without flattening the creative vision.
App Store and Play Store approvals
Kids-category review is its own gauntlet. I worked the apps through both stores and got them approved on schedule.
Testing
Compliance that has not been tested is just intent. I made sure the privacy requirements were verified in the product before launch, not assumed.
Security
Security review for a kids' product, done before launch rather than after.
Internal compliance registration
The unglamorous part: registering the product in Verizon's internal compliance systems and collecting every internal approval it needed to exist.
The outcome
Replica launched on time at the Met in NYC. The museum saw a 35% increase in foot traffic and 200K+ new visitors, and the experience earned 1.4B impressions without a dollar of paid media. The work picked up seven industry awards along the way.
